FAQs

Platform and Getting Started

What is Piper?

Piper is your educational and healthcare concierge. It brings together your child’s medical information, therapies, school reports, documents, and daily progress into one organized place so you can make clear, confident decisions without feeling overwhelmed.

Who is Piper for?

Piper is built for parents and caregivers of children with ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, or Depression, or anyone managing a complex care load. It’s especially helpful if you feel overwhelmed by fragmented information and want a clearer, more reliable view of your child’s care.

How is Piper different from a regular health app, calendar, or journal?

Piper does more than store reminders or notes. It connects every part of your child’s care such as progress tracking, medications, allergies, therapies, documents, EHR data such as lab results, wearable health data, and LifeLogs. It helps you understand and use that information to make better decisions.

What problems will Piper help me solve?

You’ll stop feeling overwhelmed by scattered files, endless decisions, and incomplete information. The app organizes everything, syncs medical data from athenahealth EHR, summarizes long documents, and gives you personalized insights so you can see what’s helping your child, and what’s not.

Does my child need a formal diagnosis to use Piper?

No. You can start at any stage, whether your child already has a diagnosis or you’re just beginning to collect documents, records, and observations. Piper helps you stay organized and gain clarity no matter where you are in the journey.

What devices does Piper support?

Piper is available on iOS and Android. Download it from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Apple Watch integration is currently available on iOS only. All other features work on both platforms.

How do I get started?

Download Piper from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, tap Get Started, create an account with your email, and verify the 6-digit code sent to your inbox. From there, add your child’s profile, connect to their EHR if available, and begin uploading key documents or completing the initial questionnaires.

What should I review during onboarding?

During onboarding, you’ll set your privacy preferences  including whether to share anonymized usage data and review POD Health’s data security commitments.

What information do I need to set up my child’s profile?

Start with the basics: your child’s name, date of birth, and gender, along with any known medications and therapies. Over time, you can add documents, link an EHR, connect an Apple Watch, log therapies, immunizations, allergies, medications, and lab results, and record LifeLogs to build a complete picture.

Can I add multiple children?

Yes. You can create separate profiles for multiple children and switch between them in the app. Each child’s data, documents, and progress are clearly separated while remaining accessible from the same parent account.

Can I share Piper with another caregiver for the same child?

Yes. Multiple caregivers can use Piper together. Everyone sees the same up-to-date information, so there’s no need for separate notes or passing files back and forth.

How quickly will I see value from Piper?

Most parents start seeing value within the first few days. Uploading a few key documents, answering the initial questionnaires, connecting a wearable, journaling LifeLogs, and linking an EHR (if available) is usually enough to get a clear overview and start receiving useful insights from Piper Chat.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Your account is protected by your login credentials, and your data is not stored in plain form on the device. Simply log in from another iOS or Android device and update your password if needed to prevent unauthorized access.

Data & Documents

What types of documents can I upload?

You can scan or upload school reports, IEPs, therapy notes, psychological evaluations, diagnostic reports, lab reports, and any other PDFs or images related to your child’s care. The app supports both scanned documents and digital files with no restrictions on what you upload.

How are my documents organized?

Documents are displayed as a single list sorted by date uploaded, making it easy to find what you need quickly. You can search by name, view a separate list of generated summaries, and star important records so critical files are always within reach.

Can I upload documents from my computer?

Yes. You can upload files directly from your phone or from your computer. The app supports images, standard document formats, and PDFs, all stored securely as PDFs in your POD Health Cloud. The same 2 GB storage limit applies regardless of where you upload from.

How does document summarization work?

After uploading a document, tap the Generate Summary button to create an AI-powered summary. Piper Chat extracts key information and produces a concise summary highlighting what matters most such as diagnoses, recommendations, scores, or follow-up actions. Summaries are saved and can be accessed or shared at any time.

Can I search across my documents?

Yes. You can search across documents by typing the document name, making it easy to find a specific recommendation, term, or report without manually scanning through files. You can also sort by date and name to make it easier to organize your documents.

What if the app extracts something incorrectly from a document?

You stay in full control. You can review any extracted information at any time to ensure your child’s profile remains accurate and reflects your understanding of their history.

Are there limits on document size or the number of files I can upload?

There are no limits on document size or the number of uploads. You have 2 GB of space in your POD Health Cloud to store your files.

How do I organize important files?

Mark any file as Starred to keep critical items such as diagnostic summaries or prescriptions easy to find at any time.

athenahealth EHR & Medical Data

Do I need to connect an EHR to use Piper?

No. EHR integration is optional. You can still upload documents, log therapies and medications, track progress, connect wearables, record LifeLogs, and use Piper without connecting a medical record. Connecting an EHR simply reduces manual work and keeps medical data automatically up to date.

What medical data can Piper import from my child’s EHR?

The app can automatically import medications, allergies, immunizations, and lab results from your athenahealth EHR. This data appears in your child’s profile without requiring you to manually re-enter it.

How often does EHR syncing happen?

Syncing happens automatically in the background on a regular basis. When new medications, lab results, allergies, or immunizations appear in your medical record, they are reflected in the app shortly after.

What if my child’s EHR system is not supported?

You can still use Piper fully by uploading reports and entering key details manually. The app currently supports athenahealth users from the Child Neurology Consultants of Austin (CNCA) clinic. Additional EHR connections may become available over time.

How do I connect my child’s EHR?

Tap Sync with athenahealth, log in using your provider credentials, and grant read-only access.

Can I disconnect the EHR connection later?

Yes. You can choose to disconnect your child’s EHR from the app. When you do, no new data will be fetched. You remain in control of what is linked and when.

Will EHR data overwrite what I manually enter?

No. Manual entries and synced entries remain separate. You can only edit locally entered data.

Does Piper make any changes to my EHR?

No. Piper only reads data from your athenahealth EHR, it does not write back or change anything in the official medical record.

How do I view lab results?

Go to your child’s profile, tap the Manage tab, then tap the Lab Results card to see historical values along with normal versus abnormal indicators.

Piper Chat (AI Assistant)

What can Piper’s AI Chat do for me?

Piper AI is the app’s AI assistant. It understands your child’s profile and gives you clear, personalized answers using your child’s data and trusted medical sources. You can ask about symptoms, medications, behaviors, lab results, reports, or therapy recommendations and get context-specific guidance. Type your questions or use voice dictation to ask by speaking.

How is Piper’s AI Chatbot different from a general AI chatbot?

Piper AI is grounded in your child’s actual data: documents, progress, medications, LifeLogs, wearable data, and medical records. Rather than giving generic responses, it tailors its answers to your child’s specific situation and uses only trusted sources to support its guidance.

Can Piper AI replace my doctor or therapist?

No. Piper AI is not a replacement for professional care. It helps you understand information, prepare for appointments, and ask better questions but medical decisions should always be made with your child’s clinicians.

What kinds of questions can I ask Piper AI?

You can ask Piper AI anything related to your child’s profile. For example:

  • “Has my child’s condition improved this month?”
  • “Summarize this psychological evaluation.”
  • “Explain this lab result.”
  • “Does this medication have any side effects?”
  • “Summarize symptoms since our last visit.”
  • “Was March better than February?”

How does Piper AI use my child’s data safely?

Piper uses your child’s information only within the app to provide contextually relevant, personalized insights. It does not share your child’s data with advertisers or third parties for marketing purposes, and its use of data follows the same privacy and security protections as the rest of the app.

What are prompt templates in Piper’s AI Chat?

Prompt templates are pre-written conversation starters that appear in the Piper AI Chat interface. They cover common use cases such as interpreting lab results, summarizing documents, or understanding progress trends. Tapping a template immediately starts a conversation based on that question. You’re never limited to the templates, you can always type your own question directly.

Can I write my own questions in the Piper AI Chat instead of using templates?

Yes. The prompt templates are there for convenience and inspiration, but you can always type your own question directly into the prompt bar. You are not limited to the templates provided.

How does Piper AI personalize insights?

Piper AI combines your child’s progress data, EHR-synced and manually entered information, uploaded documents, LifeLogs, wearable data, growth charts, and trusted medical knowledge to generate insights specific to your child’s situation.

Can Piper AI interpret therapy or medication effectiveness?

Piper AI can use your existing data to provide information about the relationship between therapies, medications, and your child’s progress. For establishing causality, it’s recommended that you consult your doctor directly.

Can Piper AI create summaries?

Yes. You can generate a summary of any uploaded document by tapping the Generate Summary button, or by asking Piper’s AI Chat directly. Any summary can be exported as a PDF.

Can Piper AI explain lab results?

Yes. Piper AI can explain what a value means, what the normal range indicates, and what to discuss with your clinician without making a diagnosis.

Can Piper AI analyze trends over time?

Yes. You can ask questions like “Was March better than February?” or “What was the month-on-month progress for 2025?” and Piper AI will analyze the trends in your child’s data.

What are Piper AI’s limitations?

Piper AI cannot diagnose or prescribe, replace your child’s clinicians, or infer missing data. When it doesn’t have enough information, it will tell you what’s missing and may prompt you to upload a document or complete a questionnaire.

How do I get the most out of Piper AI?

Regularly upload documents, log therapies, complete questionnaires, and record LifeLogs. Piper AI becomes more powerful and helpful as your child’s data grows over time.

Progress & Insights

What conditions can I track in Piper?

You can track progress for ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, and Depression through structured questionnaires that use clinically certified scoring to assess your child’s condition over time. The app will expand to support additional conditions in the future.

What do the condition questionnaires cover?

Each condition has its own dedicated questionnaire:

  • ADHD: 18 questions with a symptom breakdown and trend
  • Autism: 50 questions with a trend
  • Anxiety: 7 questions with a trend
  • Depression: 9 questions with a trend

How often should I complete the questionnaires?

The app encourages regular check-ins — daily, weekly, or bi-weekly — at a cadence that balances usefulness with your workload. You can adjust the frequency to what feels sustainable after speaking with your doctor.

How does Piper link medications and therapies to my child’s progress?

When you log medications and therapies and complete progress questionnaires, Piper automatically connects these data points. You’ll see how changes in treatment align with changes in your child’s symptoms, helping you understand what’s helping, what isn’t, and what to discuss with your clinician.

How are insights shown in the app?

Insights are displayed through clear, easy-to-read graphs that track your child’s progress over time alongside medications and therapies. Rather than showing raw numbers, Piper highlights trends, changes, and possible relationships. You can ask Piper Chat follow-up questions to explore patterns more deeply.

How do I interpret the results?

ADHD charts show a breakdown of hyperactive versus inattentive symptoms. All other conditions show trends over time. You can also ask Piper Chat to interpret any pattern for you.

How do I track growth metrics?

Go to the Manage section, tap the Growth card, enter your child’s height, weight, and head circumference, and view the updated growth chart.

What’s the benefit of using Piper consistently?

Consistent use builds a continuous record that improves decision-making and allows Piper Chat to provide stronger, more personalized insights over time.

LifeLog

What is a LifeLog?

LifeLog is a built-in journal for recording observations, notes, highlights, lowlights, progress events, and reflections about your child’s day. You can type entries or use the mic button for voice dictation to capture thoughts quickly. Past entries are saved in a chronological list so you can review them over time.

How does Piper Chat use my LifeLog entries?

Piper Chat proactively draws on your LifeLog entries when generating insights and answering your questions. You can also explicitly ask Piper Chat to summarize your entries or identify patterns across them. The more consistently you log, the more context Piper Chat has to help you understand your child’s experience.

Can I share my LifeLog entries?

Yes. You can share individual entries using your device’s built-in sharing options. You can also ask Piper Chat to generate a summary of your entries, which can then be exported as a PDF and shared with your child’s care team.

Wearables

Can I connect an Apple Watch to Piper?

Yes. You can connect an Apple Watch to sync health data directly into your child’s profile. The app reads activity, heart rate, heart rate variability, and sleep data. For Anxiety and Depression, it also captures environmental audio exposure. This data powers richer, more personalized insights in Piper Chat and is displayed on the Vitals card on the home screen. Apple Watch integration is currently available on iOS only.

What health data does the Apple Watch sync for each condition?

For ADHD and Autism, the app syncs activity metrics (steps, distance, active energy, and exercise time), heart rate, heart rate variability, and sleep. For Anxiety and Depression, it syncs all of the above and additionally captures environmental audio exposure, which can be a relevant factor in understanding sensory experiences and mood patterns.

Do I need an Apple Watch to use Piper?

No. The Apple Watch connection is optional. All other features including Piper Chat, progress questionnaires, document management, and LifeLogs are available without a wearable. Connecting an Apple Watch simply adds an extra layer of continuous, objective data to enrich your child’s profile.

How does wearable data feed into Piper Chat?

Piper Chat automatically incorporates your child’s Apple Watch data when generating insights and answering your questions. You don’t need to ask it to use the data specifically — when you ask about sleep patterns, activity levels, or anxiety trends, Piper Chat draws on wearable data alongside questionnaire results, documents, and all other information in your child’s profile.

Collaboration & Sharing

How does Piper support collaboration with clinicians, therapists, and schools?

By keeping your child’s data clean, organized, and visual, Piper makes it easier to have productive conversations with professionals. Instead of trying to recall details from memory, you can share clear progress graphs, summaries, and timelines during appointments.

Can I share information with my child’s care team?

Yes. You can export documents, summaries, and LifeLogs as PDFs and share them using your device’s built-in sharing options such as email, messages, or AirDrop. Clinicians and therapists often find these trends and summaries very helpful when making decisions.

Can my child’s clinicians log directly into Piper?

The current version of Piper is designed primarily for parents and caregivers. Clinicians access information through the summaries and reports you choose to share. Future versions may explore additional clinician-facing features or integrations.

How do I quickly access critical health information?

Tap Starred Documents on your child’s profile to find allergy notes, emergency plans, medication lists, diagnostic summaries, and other essential records at a moment’s notice.

How do I update records after a medical event?

Upload any new documents such as discharge summaries, add new prescriptions, and log any follow-up instructions directly in your child’s profile.

Security, Privacy & Control

How is my child’s data stored and secured?

All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access to your account is protected, and only you control who receives exported summaries or shared information. Piper follows a privacy-first approach consistent with healthcare-grade applications.

Who can see my child’s information?

Only people you permit can see your child’s information. Clinicians and schools do not automatically gain access, they only see what you explicitly choose to share, such as exported PDFs.

Is my data used for advertising or sold to third parties?

No. Your child’s data is not sold to advertisers and is not used to target ads. The purpose of Piper is to support your child’s care, not to monetize their health information.

Can I delete my child’s data if I stop using the app?

Yes. You can request deletion of your data, and the app will remove your child’s information from its systems, subject to any legal or compliance requirements. You remain in control of whether your data persists.

How does Piper Chat use my child’s data?

Piper Chat uses your child’s information only within the app to provide contextually relevant, personalized insights. It does not share your child’s data with advertisers or third parties for marketing purposes, and its use of data follows the same privacy and security protections as the rest of the app.

Usage, Limits & Daily Experience

How much time will I need to spend using Piper each week?

Just a few minutes a week — answering a questionnaire, uploading a document, journaling a LifeLog, or checking your dashboard. Piper is designed to save you time overall by reducing repeated searches, manual re-entry, and information hunting.

Does Piper send reminders or notifications?

Reminders and notifications are on our product roadmap and will be available in a future update.

Can I use Piper offline?

You can view some information that was previously loaded on your device, but features like Piper Chat, syncing, and uploading new documents require an internet connection to ensure your data stays accurate and up to date.

What happens if I stop using the app for a while?

Your data remains in place, and you can pick up where you left off at any time. Progress graphs will reflect the periods where no new information was added, and you can resume with fresh check-ins and uploads whenever you’re ready.

How do I give feedback?

You can share feedback directly through the app’s support or feedback section. Real-world usage and parent insights are critical to improving Piper and shaping future features.

How do I get help if I run into an issue?

In-app support is available to help with technical issues, data questions, or general usage. You can also contact our support team through the channels listed in the app if something isn’t working as expected.
